Officer who shot 2 during chase is cleared to return to duty

READING, Pa. (AP) - An eastern Pennsylvania police officer who shot and wounded two people during a pursuit has been cleared to return to duty.

WFMZ-TV reports Tuesday (https://bit.ly/1PxlrDK ) that an internal review found the Reading officer’s actions in July fell within department policy.

Berks County District Attorney John Adams had previously ruled the officer was justified in using deadly force. They are not disclosing the officer’s name.

Police say the officer opened fire July 19 when a vehicle backed up into his cruiser on a dead-end road after a low-speed chase.

The 17-year-old driver was hit four times. The 18-year-old passenger was hit once and was treated and released.

Police said a loaded handgun was found in the vehicle, but the suspects fired no shots. The driver is facing robbery and stolen property charges.
