GARFIELD, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a fire in northern New Jersey badly damaged two building units and displaced more than a dozen people.
Garfield Police Sgt. Mike Marsh told The Record (https://bit.ly/1P02xUN ) that the three-alarm blaze displaced 16 people from five apartments.
The fire began about 8:40 a.m. Sunday at 105 Jewell St. before spreading to the adjacent building unit. Both house businesses with apartments above.
Nine of the residents got treatment for smoke inhalation at the scene and at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Two firefighters had minor injuries.
The case of the fire is under investigation.
Minor damage at a third nearby building was also reported.
