TUSKEGEE, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a 5-year-old student was struck by a school bus and killed after dropping his books and stopping to pick them up on a road in eastern Alabama.
Macon County Coroner Hal Bentley tells Al.com (https://bit.ly/1Mni3LB ) that Bissiah Hedges was struck early Monday about 15 miles from Tuskegee.
Bentley says the boy bent down to pick up a notebook and candy while he was in the road, and the bus driver didn’t see him.
State trooper spokesman Jess Thornton says it appears the death was a tragic accident. He says it doesn’t appear the bus driver was negligent.
The child was a kindergartner at George Washington Carver Elementary School in Tuskegee.
