DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - The DeKalb County board chairman says possible cuts and no state budget are why the county won’t provide funding assistance for this year’s Illinois high school football championships.

This year’s championships will be at Northern Illinois University on Nov. 27-28. DeKalb County Board members gave the host committee $25,000 in 2013, but not this year.

Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr. tells The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle ( ) that “with the state not having a budget” the best thing is to “offer our verbal support and not our financial support.”

Host committee member Brad Hoey says it would be nice to have county money, but the board’s resolution of support will boost efforts like recruiting volunteers.

The championships are at NIU in odd-numbered years and at the University of Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana in even years.
