NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) - A former state correctional officer who pleaded guilty to raping several women in Hartford and New Britain has been sentenced to 20 years behind bars.

Thirty-one-year-old Kelvin Grisales, of New Britain, pleaded guilty in May to four counts of first-degree sexual assault as part of a deal with prosecutors.

Grisales was charged last year with sexually assaulting a woman in Hartford. Authorities say he was then linked to another assault in Hartford and two more in New Britain through DNA testing. Police eventually charged him with more than 20 crimes including sexual assault and kidnapping.

Grisales was a guard at the Hartford Correctional Center.

A defense attorney says Grisales blacked out during the attacks and that his crimes “were a manifestation of his self-loathing” and a desire to kill himself.
