A Texas school district is apologizing after complaints that a seventh-grade teacher gave students an assignment teaching that God is a myth.

Jordan Wooley, a Methodist student at West Memorial Junior High School in Katy, said the assignment was to identify “factual claims, commonplace assertions and opinions.” She said she originally answered the statement “there is no God” in two ways, a local CBS News affiliate reported.

“I said it was fact or opinion,” Jordan told the station. “Based on my religion and based on what I think and believe, I do not think it was a commonplace assertion.”

The girl said her teacher told her both answers were wrong and that she had to admit God wasn’t real.

“It was really confusing to me at first because I didn’t really know what to do, so the first thing I did was tell my mom,” Jordan told CBS.

“So the kids were caught in a Catch-22,” said her mother, Chantel. “If they argued their faith, they were being told they were arguing against their faith and that happened in the classroom.”

Jordan spoke about the issue Monday night in front of Katy ISD’s Board of Education meeting. On Tuesday, the school district released a statement saying, “the activity will no longer be used by the school, and appropriate personnel action will be taken.”

“The activity, which was intended to encourage critical thinking skills and dialogue by engaging students in an exercise wherein they identified statements as fact, opinion, or common assertion was not intended to question or challenge any student’s religious beliefs as reported by some media outlets,” the statement said, in part. “The teacher is distraught by this incident, as some commentary has gone as far as to vilify her without knowing her, her Christian faith, or the context of the classroom activity.”

“Still, this does not excuse the fact that this ungraded activity was ill-conceived and because of that, its intent had been misconstrued,” the school district said.
