BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Birmingham fire officials say a disabled man has been removed from an apartment building days after a fire.

Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis tells Al.com (https://bit.ly/1M00POH ) firefighters were called back to an apartment building that had been evacuated Monday and were told that a man had been left behind in the building.

Mardis says firefighters had gone door-to-door and didn’t get an answer when they checked on the man’s apartment. Mardis says firefighters assumed the man’s unit was empty.

Mardis says the building’s maintenance staff also checked every apartment after the fire and department officials will discuss how the man may have been overlooked during the evacuation.

Mardis says the man has been taken to UAB Hospital and was in stable condition when he was taken from the building.
