LAMESA, Texas (AP) - A former West Texas police officer has been sentenced to three consecutive life prison terms for ongoing sexual abuse of a young girl over a five-year period, starting when the girl was 5 years old.

State District Judge Carter Schildknecht sentenced Antonio De La Cruz in Lamesa on Thursday, with each sentence to be served consecutively.

The sentence came one day after jurors returned guilty verdicts to two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal (https://bit.ly/1NDWaVs) reports a Dawson County jury of seven men and five women deliberated about 30 minutes on Wednesday before convicting the 48-year-old former South Plains narcotics officer.

De La Cruz maintained he was innocent of the allegations. His attorney promises an appeal.
