SAN ELIZARIO, Texas (AP) - A 62-year-old West Texas woman has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for strangling her husband to death with her apron strings.

Martha Acevedo (ah-suh-VAY’-doh) was sentenced Thursday in El Paso, one day after an El Paso County jury found her guilty of murder in the death of Jose Acevedo.

Prosecutors say Acevedo killed her husband in September 2014 in their San Elizario (san ehl-ee-ZAR’-ee-oh) home. Sheriffs were dispatched to the couple’s home and found the victim unresponsive.

According to testimony, the Acevedos had a volatile, alcohol-fueled relationship of 41 years that climaxed when Jose Acevedo punched his wife in the face, knocking her out, after a day of drinking. Martha Acevedo said she strangled her husband after she regained consciousness and found him passed out.
