MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen says the Senate Judiciary Committee has given its approval of Edward Stanton III for District Court judge.

Cohen’s office said in a statement Thursday that the committee’s approval clears the way for a final vote on Stanton’s nomination by the full Senate.

Stanton, a lifelong Memphis resident, has served as U.S. attorney for 22 West Tennessee counties since 2010. He was senior counsel for FedEx before he became U.S. attorney.

Cohen, a Memphis Democrat, recommended Stanton for a federal judgeship after convening a screening committee of Memphis-area attorneys.
