SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) - Bids are going out for the construction of a new train station in the city of Schenectady.

The state Department of Transportation on Thursday issued a pre-bid notice with contract details for the new Amtrak station to be built at the site of the current one in downtown Schenectady.

DOT officials say station construction is expected to start in the spring as crews complete the placement of a second rail track between Albany and Schenectady. Having two tracks will alleviate train traffic backups between the two cities.

The new station will be owned by Amtrak. The current station, built in the 1970s, will be torn down.

DOT officials say station construction is expected to be completed in early 2018.

Construction of a new Amtrak station in Rochester is currently underway.
