MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - An East Missoula man says he tried to beat one of his dogs to death with a hammer after shelter officials told him they couldn’t take the animal.

The Missoulian reports (https://bit.ly/1RDD7LI ) Shawn Patrick Finberg pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty on Thursday.

Charging documents say Finberg’s roommate wanted Finberg to get rid of his three dogs because they barked too much.

Finberg told officers the local animal shelters were full and he decided to kill the dogs.

A neighbor reported she heard screaming and saw through her window Finberg beating a dog in the head with a hammer.

Deputies found the pit bull bloody and injured. It is now in a shelter.

Finberg is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday.
