PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A 25-year-old Providence man accused of beating a married couple with a baseball bat has been ordered held without bail.

Police say 25-year-old Viden Chhoeun was arraigned Friday in District Court on charges of felony assault and assault on a person over 60 causing serious bodily injury.

Viden Chhoeun is accused of attacking on Wednesday night 72-year-old Rafael Carrasco and his 70-year-old wife, Maricela, after the man’s car ran out of gas and his wife arrived in another vehicle to help.

The victims were found on the ground. She was unconscious and he was too injured to speak. Rafael Carrasco is in critical condition and his wife is in serious condition.

Police have not said what led to the attack, but that robbery does not appear to be a motive.
