ERIE, Pa. (AP) - Mercyhurst University in northwestern Pennsylvania will require all of its student-athletes to live on campus beginning in the fall of 2016.

President Michael Victor tells The Erie Times-News (https://bit.ly/1P1L53I ) the university’s decision is intended to improve both campus and community life as well as promote health and safety.

University officials say nearly all undergraduate students will be required to live on the school’s Erie campus within the next several years.

There are 650 student-athletes competing in 24 varsity sports at Mercyhurst.

Laura Zirkle, vice president for student life and athletics, says currently about 150 out of 400 students living off-campus are athletes.

Zirkle says the school has the capacity right now to house all of its off-campus students, but officials are expecting larger incoming freshman classes in the future.
