NEW ORLEANS (AP) - As New Orleans continue to boost the number in its police force, Chief Michael Harrison suggests quadrupling the amount officers get for recruiting new applicants.

Under the current policy, a department employee is eligible to earn $1,000 for every new recruit applicant they refer and mentor through graduation. The new plan would increase the amount to $4,000.

The police force has fallen below 1,200 officers, though officials say it should be around 1,600.

Harrison said Thursday that there’s been great success with the recruit referral pay program so far, but the proposed increase would ensure that more officers participate.

The proposed change requires approval by the Civil Service Commission and New Orleans City Council.
