SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Syracuse police say a 64-year-old city bus driver escaped injury when a stray bullet pierced the vehicle’s windshield and hit his cell phone.

Authorities say the bullet hit the driver in the chest, but the cell phone in his pocket deflected it. None of the 15 passengers on the bus was injured.

The shooting happened Friday morning on the city’s south side. Investigators found several empty shell casings at the street corner where the bus was stopped. Authorities say a 21-year-old man was hit several times while standing at the corner. The gunfire came from the occupants of a light colored mini-van.

Police say the bus appeared to have been hit inadvertently.
