PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix police say a 5-year-old girl was wounded in the leg during an apparent accidental shooting at her family’s home.

Sgt. Vince Lewis says initial reports indicate the shooting occurred Friday morning after the girl slipped into the house’s master bedroom while the family was having breakfast and getting ready for school.

Lewis says the gun reportedly was in a purse-type bag belonging to the girl’s mother but that investigators have yet to question the girl about what she was doing.

Lewis says the bullet exited the girl’s leg and that her wound is not life-threatening.

He says a police investigation continues but that something to take from the incident is that it is important to store guns in places which small children cannot access the weapons.
