SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police say they believe a Millcreek man was trying to protect his neighborhood after a rash of burglaries when he was killed during a gunfight after an apparent home invasion attempt.

Unified Police of Salt Lake County said Friday that 47-year-old homeowner Russell Reed Jacobs was awakened at early Thursday by someone trying to kick in the door.

Authorities say Jacobs grabbed a revolver and went outside to find 34-year-old Jesse Bruner feigning a leg injury.

Lt. Lex Bell says Jacobs chased him away and followed to make sure he left the neighborhood. Authorities say that Bruner grew up nearby, and after the men passed a few houses Jacobs said he knew who he was.

Bruner responded with a fatal blast from a sawed-off shotgun. Jacobs returned fire and both men died at the scene.
