COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Columbus police say a man shot by police in an apartment complex parking lot has died.

Police Sgt. David Pelphrey said in a statement Friday that the shooting occurred after officers observed “suspicious activity” shortly after 9 p.m. Thursday. The statement says the officers’ “encounter” with a car’s occupants in the parking lot resulted in officers firing their guns and one occupant was shot. Pelphrey says the injured suspect identified as Deaunte Lamar Bell was pronounced dead at a hospital around 10:30 p.m.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Pelphrey also said that three people were in the car and one reached for a gun. Police say the suspect’s handgun was recovered at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

Police said their investigation was continuing.
