PORT ISABEL, Texas (AP) - An 8-year-old South Texas boy has died nearly a week after a 25-foot lamppost fell on him outside a restaurant.

A family attorney says Dylan Adams of McAllen died Friday after being removed from life support at a hospital in Corpus Christi .

Port Isabel Police Chief Gualberto (gwahl-BER’-toh) Gonzalez says the accident happened Sunday. Gonzalez says the accident’s cause hasn’t been determined but storms brought gusty winds last weekend.

Gualberto says the boy attended a birthday party for a relative and was running to the family’s vehicle when the wrought-iron lamppost fell. The police chief says Dylan was struck by the light fixture.

The boy was transported to a Brownsville hospital, then taken to Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi.
