SWEET HOME, Ore. (AP) - Authorities say a 15-year-old boy drowned while fishing in the South Santiam River in Sweet Home.

Linn County Sheriff identified the teen as Matthew Ryan Van Brocklin, a student at Sweet Home High School.

Witnesses told sheriff’s deputies that Van Brocklin was fly fishing with a friend when he waded into the river and either fell or tried to swim across the river.

Witnesses saw him go under water and he did not resurface. Rescuers recovered his body within 25 feet of where he was last seen.

Sweet Home is about 45 miles northeast of Eugene.
