MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont’s lone member of the U.S. House is welcoming the election of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan as speaker of that body.

Welch, a Democrat, said he disagrees with the Republican Ryan on many issues. But he calls Ryan a good, decent and honest man and says he believes there are areas of agreement as well.

Welch says he worked closely with Ryan to help Vermont’s artisan cheesemakers threatened by what Welch terms a dumb Food and Drug Administration rule.

He says they also worked together on a budget measure that saved jobs at the Vermont Student Assistance Corp.
