AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Voters in Akron will decide Tuesday whether to allow the Akron Zoo to have a liquor license to serve wine and spirits at after-hours events.

A zoo spokesman says the Akron Zoo is the only one in Ohio that doesn’t have a liquor license at least for special occasions.

The zoo wants to be able to offer wine and mixed drinks during evening events and private rentals such as wedding receptions.

A zoo spokesman tells the Akron Beacon Journal (https://bit.ly/1jE4E58 ) that having the liquor permits will keep the zoo from having to apply for temporary permits for events like its Brew at the Zoo and its largest fundraiser.

The zoo says the extra money for liquor sales would help generate money for conservation programs and the care of its animals.
