COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - A police officer involved in a fatal shooting earlier this month has been fired.

The Clarion-Ledger reports (https://on.thec-l.com/1GRNsmM ) that Canyon Boykin was fired Friday. Boykin was one of three officers placed on leave following an Oct. 16 traffic stop that authorities said ended in the fatal shooting of Ricky Ball.

Mayor Robert Smith says Boykin was fired because he did not turn his body camera or recorder on prior to the shooting; he violated the city’s social media policy after the shooting; and his girlfriend was riding in the police car without permission.

The mayor says the council voted to suspend two other officers involved in the incident, Johnny Branch and Yolanda Young, for 30 working days without pay.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.
