NEW YORK (AP) - Employees at a T.J. Maxx on Staten Island are cleaning up the mess after a deer broke into the store overnight.

The Staten Island Advance reports (https://bit.ly/1KMZt86 ) that the deer broke through the store’s front window and was running around inside when an employee arrived to open the store at around 8 a.m. Saturday.

Police and workers from the city Department of Environmental Conservation removed the deer.

The Advance says the store remained closed later Saturday with a cleanup cart and vacuum cleaner stationed near the entrance.

Elected officials on Staten Island have complained of a growing deer population. They have urged the U.S. Department of Agriculture to come up with a deer-management plan.

A 2014 aerial survey found 763 deer on Staten Island.
