PASSAIC, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say an alleged drunken driver crashed into a police cruiser in northern New Jersey, leaving an officer with a concussion and other injuries.

Passaic police say 34-year-old Bloomfield resident Edwin Paredes faces criminal and motor vehicle charges, including assault by auto.

The crash occurred shortly before midnight Friday in the area of Main Avenue and Madison Street. Authorities say the police cruiser ended up on a concrete embankment and struck a utility pole.

The officer was taken to a hospital and treated for a concussion, a head laceration and neck and back injuries. A passenger in Paredes’ car was treated for an arm injury.

The officer’s name wasn’t released.

Paredes’ bail had not been set as of Saturday afternoon, and it wasn’t known if he had retained a lawyer.
