PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) - An American Red Cross volunteer from Rhode Island is heading to Texas to support relief efforts after severe storms there caused widespread damage.

Henry Lesieur is traveling from the Pawtucket area to Austin, Texas, where he’ll serve as a disaster mental health supervisor.

Strong storms and heavy rain have spawned tornadoes and dangerous flooding in Texas. The state was still drying out from the remnants of Hurricane Patricia when the latest storms hit.

More than 16 inches of rain soaked one Austin neighborhood on Friday. The city’s airport suspended all flights Friday after a half-foot of water flooded the air traffic control tower, and 40 flights were canceled there on Saturday.

Lesieur is one of about 3,000 volunteers in the Connecticut and Rhode Island Region of the American Red Cross.
