BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) - Former Ohio governor and U.S. Senate candidate Ted Strickland is traveling the state this weekend in support of local Democratic candidates.

Strickland, who is vying for the Democratic nomination for the Senate seat next year, plans to be in Toledo, Columbus and Chillicothe on Saturday. On Sunday, he plans stops in Massillon, Canton and Warren.

Strickland likely will challenge Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, who is seeking re-election, in one of the nation’s most closely watched races. The two were in a statistical tie in a recent Quinnipiac (KWIHN’-ih-pee-ak) University poll.

Cincinnati Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld also is running for the Democratic nomination.

Portman kicked off a grassroots push across Ohio last weekend.
