MIDVALE, Utah (AP) - Unified police say an officer mistook a man for an armed suspect during a chase in Midvale and shot him.

Police spokesman Lex Bell says the hospitalized bystander’s condition was improving Saturday.

Authorities say the incident began Friday at around 8:50 p.m. when officers made a routine traffic stop and learned the vehicle was stolen.

Bell says the driver, 32-year-old Jeremy Bowden, ran while firing multiple rounds at Officer Cory Tsouras.

Tsouras was hit in his bulletproof vest but continued the pursuit.

Police say Tsouras saw the victim running and, believing him to be the suspect, shot him twice in the leg.

Officers apprehended Bowden a short time later.

Salt Lake City police will investigate the shooting.

Tsouras is a three-year veteran of the department.
