MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities now say there’s no evidence of gunshot wounds on the carcass of a wild horse found at the Coon Bluff Campground area near Mesa.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s officials also said Monday that there’s no reason to believe at this time that the horse was intentionally killed.

The Salt River Wild Horse Management Group had said earlier that a 12-year-old mare named Dotty was found shot to death Thursday.

The group says the horse was shot three times in the head and once in the shoulder.

Management group officials say if Dottie was injured, it’s possible this was a mercy killing.

But they say someone saw the mare the day before and she appeared fine.

Sheriff’s officials say they still are seeking information about the horse’s death.
