COAST GUARD ABANDONS SEARCH FOR 33 CREW MEMBERS; DATA RECORDER MAY HOLD KEY TO THE TRAGEDY

An intensive search by air and sea over tens of thousands of square miles turned up one unidentified body in a survival suit and a heavily damaged lifeboat but no sign of survivors from the 790-foot El Faro, which was last heard from nearly from a week ago as it was being tossed around in rough seas.

St. Petersburg police say 27-year-old Justin H. Smith was working at the site of a future apartment complex Wednesday morning when the reversing bulldozer struck him. He died at the scene.

The man is accused of attempted murder after threatening to kill his girlfriend while traveling at speeds up to 120 mph before crashing his car. No one was seriously injured.
