DETROIT (AP) - Bidding in an auction for the former American Motors Corp. headquarters in Detroit is starting at $500.

The Detroit News (https://detne.ws/1Nkjb2d ) reports that the 1.4-million-square-foot facility is among 25,500 properties up for sale in a Wayne County tax foreclosure auction that began on Tuesday and runs through Oct. 22.

The future owner of the complex also will have to pay the building’s summer tax bill totaling more than $160,000.

The facility opened in 1927 and has housed refrigerator manufacturer Kelvinator, as well as American Motors.

If no one bids on the property, the city could take ownership of it.
