PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A deputy sheriff has been recognized for his actions in securing a murder scene outside of his own home during an awards ceremony for law enforcement officers in Providence.

WPRI-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1Gww5T7 ) Deputy Sheriff Edward Cooper was honored Tuesday night along with his son and wife after he detained a suspect at gunpoint after four women were stabbed, one fatally, on Sept. 1.

Cooper’s son alerted him to the stabbing while he was upstairs watching television.

Cooper says he grabbed his gun, and immediately encountered one of the surviving victims collapsed on his front porch.

The deputy says the suspect began walking toward him with the knife still in his hand before he was able to subdue him with the threat of his service weapon.
