PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Three firefighters were hospitalized after flames ripped through a Providence strip mall, causing major damage to several businesses.

Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Joseph Desmarais says the fire was reported shortly after 5 a.m. Wednesday at a single-story commercial building on Reservoir Avenue.

Fire officials say the building was unoccupied at the time of the blaze.

Firefighters needed to cut through steel security shutters to extinguish the smoldering complex.

Desmarais says the three injured firefighters were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with undisclosed injuries determined to be non-life threatening.

Officials say three or four businesses will be unable to reopen, including Sunny Market Place Asian Market, which was the most extensively damaged.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
