RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A Russellville High School student is in custody after police say the boy brought an unloaded gun to school.

Russellville City Schools Superintendent Heath Grimes tells local media that school officials received information from a different student that someone was possibly bringing a gun to school on Tuesday.

The suspect, a 15-year-old freshman, was approached by Russellville Police Department’s school resource officers upon his arrival to school Tuesday morning. Authorities say they found an unloaded gun inside his backpack. They did not find any ammunition.

Police say he’s being charged with possession of a gun on school property plus second-degree theft of property and third-degree theft of property. He is being held at the Tennessee Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

Authorities say he probably will not return to the school.
