MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - Prosecutors say a man has been charged in connection with the 2002 shooting death of a teenager on Long Island.

Wuilmer (WIHL’-mur) Mendosa pleaded not guilty Thursday to a second-degree murder charge.

Authorities say the 32-year-old was arrested in Texas in May as he tried to enter the U.S. from El Salvador.

Prosecutors allege Mendosa fatally shot 18-year-old Jonathan Harris in October 2002.

Authorities said Mendosa, whom they identified as an MS-13 gang member, asked Harris if he was a member of a rival gang.

They say the teen was shot four times when he denied being affiliated with a gang.

Prosecutors say Mendosa discarded the gun, borrowed money and then fled the country.

His attorney did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
