RENO, Nev. (AP) - A man who kept a Reno police SWAT team at bay in an armed standoff in Stead has been arrested as a suspect in the killing of his 72-year-old mother.

Police Lt. William Rulla identified the shooting victim Thursday as Delphina Mederios of Reno. She was found dead in the front yard after police responded to reports of gunshots Wednesday afternoon at a home in Stead north of Reno.

Rulla said her son, Edward Pundyk, was booked into the Washoe County jail on an open murder charge. He says strange devices were seen inside the house, so the bomb squad was called to make sure the building wasn’t booby-trapped.

Police evacuated nearby homes until the bomb squad determined the devices weren’t a threat.

Rulla said the case remains under investigation.
