MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A jury has convicted a Long Island man of felony assault charges in connection with a 2014 attack on his ex-girlfriend and her friend.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1JUjV6B ) 30-year-old Anibal Ramirez was found guilty Wednesday in a Nassau County Court of first-degree assault, second-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon and other offenses.

Prosecutors said he attacked his former girlfriend and a male acquaintance on Sept. 21, 2014 when the two arrived at an apartment where she had lived with Ramirez’s two children.

Prosecutors said the Hempstead man bit his ex-girlfriend in the face, ripping off a chunk of her lip and the skin on her chin, and struck the man with a hammer.

Ramirez is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 6. His attorney says he plans to appeal.
