GRETNA, La. (AP) - A 31-year-old man has been given a life sentence in the 2014 slaying of a Larose woman.

Emilio Calderon, a Honduran who was living in Larose, was sentenced Wednesday in Gretna. He was convicted on Sept. 24 of second-degree murder and first-degree feticide.

The victim was 23-year-old Katherine Martinez of Terrytown.

The Daily Comet (https://bit.ly/1MfsTBD) reports that - according to public defender Jessica Mullaly - Calderon and Martinez were in a sexual relationship, but Martinez became pregnant with another man’s baby.

Mullaly said although Calderon confessed to stabbing Martinez and then strangling her, a coroner’s report showed the victim was strangled first.

The defense is seeking a new trial.
