HOUMA, La. (AP) - Terrebonne Parish is working toward acquiring the rest of the land needed to complete the Bayou Country Sports Complex.

The Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1VGfKrc) the parish council passed a resolution Wednesday to authorize acquisition of 40 acres of land as part of the park’s anticipated 100 acres. Part of a Land and Water Conservation Fund Project Grant that was applied for in March 2013 is being used for the purchase.

One of the requirements for accepting $250,000 from the grant is that the entire project site must be maintained in perpetuity for outdoor recreation, Terrebonne Parish Manager Al Levron said.

“Should the site at any future time be converted to any use other than public outdoor recreation, it shall at the project sponsor’s expense be replaced with property in equal value and equivalent recreation use,” Levron said.

At Monday’s Budget and Finance Committee meeting, the council introduced an ordinance to obtain 44.8 acres owned by Danos Properties. The purchase price of that tract of land will be determined by an appraisal to not exceed fair market value.

Ground was officially broken at the roughly $23 million Houma sports complex between Louisiana Highway 311 and the Valhi Boulevard extension, south of the Lakes subdivision, a week ago.

The first phase of construction is nearing completion with fields anticipated to be ready for use beginning in spring next year.

Acquiring the rest of the land for the park is a part of the second phase of construction that includes extending the access road from La. 311 to the other side of the property at the Valhi Boulevard extension and installing sewage and water lines and drainage.

A public hearing on acquiring the land owned by Danos Properties is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 21.
