NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Huntington Ingalls Industries expects to save several million dollars in utility costs a year by converting a steam-generating plant from heavy fuel oil to natural gas.

The company says the conversion of the plant at Newport News Shipbuilding also will reduce emissions and improve safety.

Many of the shipyard’s facilities are heated with steam generated by the plant. Hot water, food preparation and galley services to ships undergoing overhaul and construction are supported by the plant.

The old system included three 70-year-old boilers. Huntington Ingalls said Thursday in a news release that the old system burned about 6 million gallons of heavy fuel oil in 2014, at a cost of about $15 million.
