OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - University of Oklahoma senior guard Buddy Hield has been named the Big 12 preseason Player of the Year.

Hield was selected in a vote by the league’s head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.

The 6-foot-4 Hield led the Big 12 in scoring last season at 17.4 points per game overall. He averaged 18.5 points per game during conference play and was named to The Associated Press All-America third team.

Hield is joined on the preseason All-Big 12 first team by Rico Gathers of Baylor; Georges Niang of Iowa State; Perry Ellis of Kansas; and Isaiah Taylor of Texas.

Oklahoma State guard Phil Forte was selected as a preseason All-Big 12 honorable mention.
