PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Police have identified a man whose body they recovered after he dove under a fishing boat in Portland Harbor and never resurfaced.

Deputy Fire Chief Robert Thompson says crews searched the water near the Portland Fish Pier and found 56-year-old Dennis McGrath of Scarborough. He says it took “quite a while” to recover the body.

The city was notified of a possible diving accident around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

WMTW-TV reports McGrath was a commercial diver contracted to work under a vessel.

Thompson says police are leading the investigation. He referred questions to the city. City officials say the death remains under investigation but does not appear suspicious.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office and the Coast Guard are also investigating the accident.
