FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) - DNA testing has confirmed that remains found after a plane went missing off the southeast coast of Florida belong to a missing British pilot.

Officials say 37-year-old Andrei Posteinicu left Marathon in the Florida Keys on Feb. 7, 2014. He was scheduled to land in Vero Beach that evening.

His plane was reported missing the next day and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Coast Guard searched for several days. Debris from the plane washed up on a beach along with his backpack and a boot.

Christine Weekes of the District 19 Medical Examiner’s Office in Fort Pierce says the cause of death is listed as an accidental airplane crash.

Posteinicu was Romanian but lived in the United Kingdom. He was visiting Florida when he crashed in the rented plane.
