AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a Richmond County sheriff’s deputy has resigned a day after being charged for an altercation with his wife.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that 37-year-old Deputy David A. Sward Jr. was charged Tuesday with simple battery-family violence and interference with a 911 call.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office says Sward’s wife told investigators that the deputy pushed her down and slammed a door on her hand on Monday night. She called 911, but she says Sward took her phone and hung up. When dispatchers called back, Sward answered and said everything was fine and that the call was an “accident.”

According to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Division, Sward resigned Wednesday before an internal investigation could take place.

It is unclear whether Sward has an attorney.
