SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Police say a handcuffed man ran away from a bail bondsman and prompted hours of searching in downtown San Jose.

The San Jose Mercury News reports (https://bayareane.ws/1GxT9km ) that Lt. Rick Weger says a bail bondsman brought a 30-year-old San Jose resident in for booking on burglary and assault charges Wednesday afternoon.

Weber says the bondsman brought the handcuffed man into the lobby, but the man quickly turned and ran off.

Police, dogs and the department’s SWAT team spent hours going door-to-door and checking yards while searching for the runaway. They called off the search just before9 p.m.

The man is still on the run.

Weger says he can’t remember a suspect ever escaping so close to jail.
