STAUNTON, Va. (AP) - A woman has been charged with falsifying reports regarding the presence of asbestos in a Staunton courthouse.

Multiple media outlets report that 51-year-old Melissa S. Hart was arrested Monday on one felony count of forging a public record and another felony count related to falsifying documents.

The arrest is the result of an ongoing investigation into documents provided to the City of Staunton after Hart reported that Cochran Judicial Center contained asbestos when it did not.

Hart used to be employed by a civil engineering firm contracted by the city. Police say that while working at the firm, Hart falsified asbestos test reports and provided them to the city. Authorities have not released a motive.

It was not immediately clear whether Hart has an attorney.
