MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Barre have honored three men with a prestigious lifesaving award after they intervened during a shooting that killed a Department of Children and Families worker.

Washington County State’s Attorney Scott Williams, former State’s Attorney Greg McNaughton, and Andy Hockman were honored at a Statehouse ceremony Thursday.

Investigators say Jody Herring was enraged at having lost custody of a child and hunted down DCF worker Lara Sobel who was involved in her case. Sobel was gunned down as she was leaving her office on Aug. 7. Herring has pleaded not guilty.

Williams tackled Herring immediately after shots rang out. McNaughton and Hockman held her down until police could arrive. Williams says their actions allowed him to comfort Sobel in her final minutes.
