ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard is reminding fishermen, boaters and paddlers around New York to be extra careful as the air and water temperatures begin to drop during the autumn months.

The area is already experiencing cooler weather, and the Coast Guard says that means those planning to be out on the water should make sure they have all the appropriate safety equipment, that it is in good condition, and they know how to use it properly.

Coast Guard officials are encouraging all boaters and paddlers to wear lifejackets while underway. They also advise filing a float plan, knowing the dangers of hypothermia and how to recognize and respond to someone who may be suffering from it, and checking the marine forecast for warnings or advisories before heading out.
