AMITE, La. (AP) - Enrollment in the Tangipahoa Parish School System is down by 281 students.

The Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/1L3sgZS) the district turned in its enrollment count to the state education department on Oct. 1, with 23 schools seeing fewer students.

Chesbrough Elementary School in north Tangipahoa Parish lost the most, 65 students. Ponchatoula Junior High School in the south end of the parish lost the second most, 61.

When not counting pre-kindergarteners, who are not included in the Minimum Foundation Program formula to calculate funding for public schools, the student population is 329 less. The formula is based on student enrollment.

The school district has 19,760 students enrolled, including pre-kindergarteners, with 18,987 students counted in the MFP formula.
